Getting To Know Your Wedding Photographer and Why it’s Important
If photography is high on your priority list, you should dedicate some time to getting to know your wedding photographer. Your photographer wants to be your friend. They want to understand what you’re like to give you the photographs you desire and make you comfortable on your special day. This applies in all sessions, not just weddings, but it’s particularly important for events that you can only do once.
If your photographer knows a little about you, they will feel more comfortable moving around freely, you will feel more comfortable and trusting of them, and after awhile you won’t even notice them getting those more candid moments. You’ll have peace of mind knowing you don’t have to think about them and you’ll have one less thing to worry about this day.
How Do I Get to Know My Photographer?
There are a few ways to become friendly with your photographer:
Book a Consultation
Before anything is set or signed, I always make sure to meet with my couples. You learn who I am, I go over samples, and we just chat. I like to do this with all my potential wedding clients so they can get a good idea of what I’m like. I also like to have them complete a questionnaire prior to coming so that I know basic information about what they want. Questions like how couples meet, how far along in planning they are, and any other important info. Part of finding a photographer is making sure their personality fits. I feel that these meetings help to feel that out.
Go for the Engagement Session
I have another post where I go deeper into why, but book an engagement session. Most of my wedding packages include one. This is important because not only does it help you get to know each other, but it gives you an idea of how the photographer works. You’ll know what to expect from them. When your wedding day finally comes, you’ll be more comfortable in front of the camera having already done it once.
Connect with them on Social Media
Most photographers have profiles on most platforms and are looking to connect with you. Seek our their accounts and engage. You’ll come to know each other as friends and be much more comfortable next time you meet.
Join their Email List
Not all photographers have one, but a lot do. If you don’t want to follow along on Facebook or Instagram, this is a great way to stay connected. Our newsletter is sent out once a month, unless we’re having a giveaway or have an approaching deadline. It’s also a way to stay tuned for any goodies, most photographers treat it like a sort of VIP list.
This helps make the most of your special day
These kinds of interactions will only enrich your experience. At your wedding, you’ll be happy to have a friend and an ally by your side, rather than a stranger.
